Separate business and household needs

Record how much of household income and wealth depends on the business. Identify personal spending, liquidity needs, debt obligations, and likely business investment. A valuable company does not necessarily provide cash when you need it.

Build a coordinated team

Business valuations, tax planning, legal agreements, insurance, and investment management require different expertise. Ask each professional to explain their scope and how they will work with the others. Confirm any separate engagement and fees.

Plan before a transaction becomes urgent

Consider a range of exit timings and after-tax proceeds with your professional team. Concentrated or illiquid wealth can require more planning than a portfolio of publicly traded assets. Do not treat an estimate of business value as a guaranteed sale price.
